Getting There

Carter Creek trailhead is 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Chester. Before you go, stop by the Almanor Ranger Station (900 Hwy. 36, 530/258-2141, www.fs.usda.gov, 8am-4:30pm Mon.-Fri.) for maps and directions. Thanks to an unsigned network of dirt roads, it can be tricky to get here; use your car’s odometer to follow these directions.

Head west on Highway 36 for 8 miles (12.9 km), then turn left to head south on Lost Creek Road for 0.4 mile. At the T intersection, make a hard right to drive west on an unsigned dirt road for 0.7 mile, then veer left and continue west on this road. After 2.3 miles (3.7 km), veer left to continue west for another 1 mile (1.6 km), then make a left at the T intersection to travel south for 4.8 miles (7.7 km). The trailhead is located on the south side of the road where the road crosses Carter Creek.
